    Electrical discharge machining was studied and applied in production in 1940s. It is in the processing, the use of the tool electrode and workpiece electrode between the continuous generation of pulsed spark discharge, at the discharge moment, the metal is corrosion at high temperature, in order to make parts of the size, shape and surface quality to meet the requirements of the processing method. Because the discharge process can be seen in the spark, it is called EDM. In the mold components processing, the workpiece and the electrode will be subjected to the electric corrosion, but the poles of the erosion amount is different, this kind of phenomenon is called the polarity effect. The processing method of the positive electrode of the workpiece is called the positive electrode processing; on the contrary, known as the negative polarity machining. The quality and machining efficiency of EDM is not only related to the choice of polarity, but also with the main parameters, working fluid, workpiece, electrode material, discharge gap and other factors.
    According to the difference of the mutual movement relationship between the tool electrode and the workpiece, electric discharge machining can divided into EDM perforation machining, EDM wire cutting, EDM grinding, EDM generating machining, EDM surface strengthening and EDM lettering. Among them, the EDM perforation forming process and EDM wire cutting in the most widely used in the mold processing.
